Aklavik Local and Traditional Knowledge about Grizzly Bears of the Yukon North Slope

Inuvialuit elders, harvesters and other land users have shared knowledge on a broad scope of grizzly bear life history traits, from seasonal behaviour and food preferences to population trends. Cultural and harvesting values and practices have also been documented, including harvesting trends, how to behave around or speak about bears, and the role of bears in the ecosystem.

Inuvialuit Traditional Knowledge of Wildlife Habitat, Yukon North Slope

The goal of this study was two-fold: to translate these “western science” ecological landcover classifications into habitat classes recognized by the Inuvialuit who use the Yukon North Slope and to document TK about important habitats used seasonally by each of the seven focal species and by some of the species of special interest.

Yukon North Slope Inuvialuit Traditional Use Study

The Yukon North Slope Inuvialuit Traditional Use (YNS ITU) study provides important information in support of the Yukon North Slope Wildlife Conservation and Management Plan. It establishes a contemporary baseline for Inuvialuit use of the YNS and provides the basis for identifying the measures necessary to conserve and protect Inuvialuit use, now and in the future.
